Baldur's Gate 3 is gaining widespread acclaim and has recently been honored with the Game of the Year award. Numerous players find themselves embarking on multiple game runs due to its great replay potential. This article provides a ranking of the best and most powerful companions for your BG3 party, from the most overpowered to the less formidable options, keeping in mind all of the updates from 2023.
S-Tier BG3 Companions
Karlach
As a Barbarian, Karlach is unstoppable during battle, gaining extra attacks every turn. She's a hard-carry in difficult situations, dealing serious damage to all enemies and demonstrating tanking potential. With a soul coin, Karlach can become a menace to all enemies in Baldur's Gate 3.

Lae'Zel
We get it, Lae'Zel is not everyone's cup of tea in BG3. She's rough, tough, and on the mean side, but boy can she destroy your enemies. Like a Githyanki Fighter soldier, Lae'Zel is almost unstoppable, getting multiple attacks per turn and being incredibly durable. She can tank and deal amazing melee damage. Change her armor, weapons—she'll still shine bright during battles.
A-Tier BG3 Companions
Gale
Gale is another controversial character in Baldur's Gate 3, disliked by many due to how quickly he can trap you into an unwanted romance or his appetite for your magical items. However, many also love him for his amazing storyline, voice acting, and versatility. If positioned correctly, Gale can deal some serious damage to your enemies, especially with level progression. He starts off weak and squishy, but by the end of the game, he can turn into a menace if built correctly.

Astarion
Astarion is not only the sassy companion but also a monster if you use him correctly. As a rogue, he needs to stay in the shadows and rely on sneak attacks. This, however, allows him to deal some OP damage. Astarion is also the best BG3 companion to use when lockpicking and pickpocketing.

Minthara
Minthara is one of the least played party companions, due to the fact that the plot of BG3 makes it difficult for players to recruit her. However, she's quite OP due to her race benefits as a drow. She's also incredibly witty and fun to venture forth with.

Shadowheart
You'll find Shadowheart quite high in almost all BG3 tier lists, but let's be honest, her place is nowhere near S tier. Similar to Astarion, she's beloved by fans because of her captivating story, but if this isn't your first playthrough, you can totally make it without her in your party. If you manage to grab Spirit Guardian with any other character, you'll be fine. Don't get us wrong; Shadowheart is a great support character, but not S-Tier worthy.

B-Tier BG3 Companions
Wyll
Wyll can be very versatile during battle, excelling in both long-range and close-range combat. Unfortunately, he starts off strong in Baldur's Gate 3 but falls behind other companions as the game progresses.

Halsin
Like all BG3 Druids, Halsin is best utilized by experienced players due to his Wild Shape transformations. However, he lacks a bit of flavor, not dealing enough damage or providing sufficient healing. Additionally, it raises the question: why create a tanky-looking character without making him a tank?

C-Tier BG3 Companions
Jaheira
Another druid companion which just doesn't shine in Baldur's Gate 3, although much weaker than Halsin. Jaheira is supposed to do the most damage with her dual-weilding swords but that's quite a weird combination for druids.

Minsc
Minsc is the last companion you can add to the party, so players rarely get to know him well. By the time you acquire him, the other party members have already outshined him.
