Writing Director Adam Smith recently appeared on the Xbox On show to answer questions after the game was announced to be available on the console at The Game Awards. In this interview, Adam was asked about the potential for new races to be added to the game. His response to the question was:

''We don't have specific plans for new races at the moment, but we're not saying no.''

In the same interview by Xbox On, Adam Smith also discussed future plans for Baldur's Gate 3. He reiterated that all hotfixes and patches will remain free for the community, and while he couldn't talk about any specific future content being added to the game, he used the word 'expansions' during his talk. Currently I can't talk about expansion plans, we're very much thinking about our next things, but nothing to announce just yet.
