Every Itadori Yuji. JJK Fan Theory Explained

Ever since the release of Season 1 in 2020, Jujutsu Kaisen has been attracting more and more anime watchers to its fan base. In the beginning, the show had a mostly comedic tone that resonated throughout all the important events, even during the fights. However, despite the many jokes incorporated in the dialogue, Jujutsu Kaisen has a very complicated plot that develops with each following episode. As with every other show, while watching the series, fans like to come up with their own ideas about some of the unresolved mysteries in the plot.

So, let’s begin with the theories!

Itadori Yuji’s Cursed Technique

One of the major mysteries of the series so far is Yuji’s powers. We know that he is one of the greatest practitioners of martial arts and his physical strength is extraordinary. Although the protagonist of the show is known to have immense cursed energy, his domain/cursed technique is still unknown. 

Interestingly, some fans speculate that his domain might give him the ability to interact with souls. There are several supposed arguments that are used to prove this theory.

• One of them, and perhaps the most significant one, is how he was able to switch bodies with Kusakabe in ch. 222 of the manga. People believe that since he was doing this with Sukuna for a long time, he came to use it with other people as well.

• The parallels between Yuji and Mahito is another argument that fans use for this theory. Their interactions, contrary understandings of life, and the fact that the two of them are supposed to be the exact opposite of one another leads fans to believe that Yuji’s cursed technique will also be related to soul control. Naturally, this would mean that rather than hurting souls like Mahito, he will be able to save them.

• Last but not least, since Sukuna’s shrine is based on Buddhist hell. It is believed that there might be some kind of religious significance to Itadori’s domain as well. A fan points out how Japanese Buddhism actually teaches that souls can reincarnate, which proves the theory even further.

Is Yuji Sukuna’s twin?

This theory might sound rather obscure but after you read some of the arguments you might start thinking otherwise. There are few key elements that make this speculation believable:

• The inspiration for Sukuna: It is a well-known fact that Jujutsu Kaisen’s author, Gege Akutami drew inspiration for Sukuna from a popular Japanese creepypasta about mummified conjoined twins. The original myth includes various aspects such as cannibalism, cults, and curses which strongly resonate with Sukuna’s design. 

• The undeniable similarity in Yuji and Sukuna’s appearance. The unique pink color is given only to the two of them and Itadori’s grandfather and father.

• References to cannibalism - another inspiration from the original Japanese myth. Interestingly, there are a few parallels to that in the series. For example, the manga mentions the possibility that Sukuna has eaten his twin in the past. Even if we think about the anime only, there we saw how Yuji began his connection to Sukuna by eating his fingers. 

• In JJK's world, twins are known to share one soul. We saw this occur between Maki and Mei as well. This would also give us a better understanding of why Sukuna seems to hate Itadori more than the rest of the characters.
