Payday 3 Released Too Soon - Servers and Matchmaking Instability

Payday 3, the co-op shooter game, hasn't had a smooth launch, but how is it dealing with its rocky start? Following a highly disappointing release marked by severe server instability, which made the game feel like an in-game menu simulator, it has gradually started to get back on its feet. However, the question remains: is it too late for the game to bounce back?

It's disheartening to witness many talented game developers ensnared in the pit of greed. Modern gaming seems to be entering a dark age of unethical practices, compelling players to purchase and play unpolished games primarily to satisfy board members, rather than focusing on what made gaming enjoyable in the first place. 

Was the Game Rushed?

After server improvements and the resumption of matchmaking, players could finally dive into the criminal world that had been in development for over seven years. It didn't take long for them to notice several missing quality-of-life features, bugs, and questionable choices from the developers. Given the anticipation following its predecessor, fans expected Payday 3 to leverage Unreal Engine 4 for an enhanced bank-robbing experience.

Who is to Blame?

Starbreeze Studios, the developers, quickly engaged with the community, addressing player questions and providing updates via daily livestreams on Twitch and YouTube. This effort was led by Almir Listo, the global brand director, who worked to bring clarity amidst the confusion and chaos. 

Watching these streams closely, it was evident how much love and passion the developers had for the game as they worked diligently to resolve issues. Unfortunately, this isn't the first instance of an unfinished game release. Some players on Reddit speculated that the publisher, Deep Silver, may have pushed for an earlier release, while others also held Starbreeze Studios accountable.

Is There Any Hope Left for Payday 3?

Amidst the uncertainty regarding the game's longevity, the developers have committed to the long term life of the franchise. They promise updates, new DLCs, and free content to keep the game fresh, similar to Payday 2. This promise comes with a hint of bitterness, as the first eagerly awaited update, featuring over 200 bug fixes, was delayed after initially being slated for release on October 5, 2023. As of now, no new information has been shared, except for the expectation of rolling out the patch in mid-October.

While some players are opting to refund the game or avoid it altogether, many are returning to Payday 2 to enjoy the features that are missing in Payday 3.

Unfortunately, there's still no concrete plan for implementing an offline mode, despite numerous players demanding a way to play without relying on the always-online practice, a trend in many contemporary games. Who can blame them after the launch disaster?
