Navigating the vast cosmos of Starfield can be quite an adventure, but understanding ship classes is key to mastering ship combat and customization. If you've found yourself perplexed by ship classes and the restrictions they impose, worry not. We're here to shed light on this aspect of the game and provide insights into how to level up your ship.

What Exactly Are Ship Classes in Starfield?

In the simplest terms, your ship's class in Starfield is intricately tied to its Reactor. To break it down further, most modules in Starfield, including weapons and shield generators, belong to one of three classes: A, B, or C. Here's the crucial part—your ship's reactor class dictates which modules it can accommodate. For instance, if your ship sports a Class B reactor, you can attach both Class A and Class B modules, but Class C modules are off-limits.

Checking Your Ship's Class

Determine your ship's class by accessing the ship menu via the main radial menu. Within the menu, your ship's stats, including its class, are conveniently displayed on the left side. It's essential to note that, counterintuitively, A is the lowest class, while C is the highest. Fortunately, upgrading your class is a straightforward process—simply locate a Ship Services technician and replace your current reactor.

Unlocking Higher-Class Reactors

However, there's a catch: you can't upgrade to Class B and Class C reactors until you've reached specific Piloting skill levels—namely, ranks 3 and 4. To pilot the finest ships in the galaxy, you'll need to engage in plenty of space battles. A useful strategy is embarking on the UC Vanguard questline, which provides opportunities for manageable space battles. Here's a pro tip: the training simulator for your entrance exam counts as a space-related skill challenge, so you can repeat it to accumulate the kills you need.

Class C ships boast access to remarkably potent modules, making them highly desirable. Therefore, aim to secure or enhance one as soon as possible, even if you need to employ a few clever tactics along the way. Venture forth and craft your dream starfighter to conquer the galaxy, as your adversaries are certainly doing the same.
