Stat Bonuses & Leveling Up:
One of the big ways you can influence your stats in Super Mario RPG is by leveling up. Each time you level up you will receive a base amount of stat increases across the board. You may also notice that each character has a different amount of base stats, making them unique from one another.

When you level up, you will also be able to choose a specific stat to further customize your character. You can use these stats to create interesting builds, fix some holes in your characters or make them a one-trick pony and go all the way with the same choices. Here is a list of the choices you have upon leveling up:
- Physical: Increases your Attack and Defense.
- Hp: Increases your Hit Points.
- Magic: Increases your Magic Attack and Magic Defense
The only stat you can't boost through this choice is Speed.

Attack & Defense Buffs:
In Super Mario RPG there are different ways you can boost your stats during combat. You can use a wide array of items and abilities to buff you characters up, increasing their damage, defenses and resistances in battle. Attack Boosts increase your Physical and Magical damage by 50%, while Defense Boosts reduce the Physical and Magical damage you take by 50%.

Keep in mind that these boosts don't stack. Applying an attack boost, after already having one active, will only replace the previous one. Having a Defense and Attack boost at the same time works though.
Resistances:
You can also buff up your elemental resistances in Super Mario RPG. Similarly to the Attack and Defense stats, you can do this through various items and abilities. Increasing your Elemental Resistance will make you take half the damage you would receive otherwise. Keep in mind that this only works against abilities that do the same damage type as the buff you have received (Fire, Ice etc.)
That is everything you need to know about how stats work in Super Mario RPG. Hopefully this guide will help you make more informed choices, while leveling up, equipping items and using abilities during combat. For more guides and news, check out the rest of our website.
