TFT New Set Revival Announced Galaxies: Return to the Stars!
Riot Games

Teamfight Tactics will be getting its first-ever set revival as part of a temporary game mode. We will be taking a look at all of the details surrounding this announcement. It has been 5 years since the release of TFT, and some players are left wondering whether previous sets would make a comeback.

Given this announcement, Riot Games is looking to start creating such temporary events so players can re-live their favorite moments from playing with past sets. TFT has always fostered a very casual and fun player community, and despite the nature of the game, it also has a strong competitive scene as Riot Games is looking to have even more tournaments in 2024.

The devs are looking to bring back the excitement from previous sets to the modern-day systems that we have in place: Portals, Augments, Items, and Combat Rules. This game mode will surely bring a lot of fun as well as more opportunities for Rioters to further develop and test out these types of game modes for future releases.

TFT Galaxies: Return to the Stars

This blog post showcases some of the thoughts behind the project and some additional information on how the game mode will function with this set revival.

Adding freshness to the gameplay and systems with each new set has been core to our approach to developing TFT since launch.

Now that we’re approaching our fifth year (!), we’ve made a lot of sets (10 to be specific) and we’ve also found ourselves dreaming fondly about older sets, wishing we could play our past favorite champions and traits, and experience those special moments again.

Good news for us, over the past few years we’ve heard the same thing from you all!

This is very welcome news to veterans of TFT as throughout the game's many sets and changes, some players would just like to revisit the first sets ever to go out and perhaps develop even more fun strategies given the addition of the new systems in the game.

Modernizing The Future-Themed Set

The devs share additional information regarding how they have chosen to approach the set revival.

Our approach to reviving Galaxies: Return to the Stars has been to bring back old champions and traits while applying learnings from modern TFT.

We hope you have fun playing the set revival and enjoy some of the updates we’ve made such as transforming Galaxies into Portals, adding Augments, and more!

Not only will players get to play with older characters but there will be even more updates to the game to help the experience still feel fresh.

Galaxies: Return to the Stars Set Mechanic

Further down in the blog post, Rioters explained how the set revival will function given the addition of the modern systems as that might result in some interesting balancing issues.

Players loved the game to game variance that the original set mechanic, Galaxies, introduced to TFT. With Runeterra Reforged, we found a new way to add variance that served a similar goal, except now you had more player agency.

With that in mind, we transformed Galaxies into Portals. Expect to see some classic Galaxies returning as Portals (yay Neekoverse) along with some modern Portals that are already live in Remix Rumble.

A clash between the old and new by making the game feel a lot more varied and engaging.

Galaxies: Return to the Stars Augments

Of course, the augments will be a part of the set revival that adds flair to the game in terms of creativity and decision-making.

Galaxies: Return to the Stars System Changes & Items

Some very drastic changes to how players usually TFT, the devs are looking to expand the champion bag size to 50 total copies in the pool.

We are significantly changing one system with the Galaxies revival: champion bag sizes. Each champion will now have 50 total copies in the pool, resulting in a dramatically reduced impact for contesting champions, and the true ability to play me mech, no scout, no pivot.

We want players to return to their favorite comps and units unabated by champion pool constraints, and bumping up to 50 of each champion allows you to both play what you hit, and play what you want.

Of course, a lot of players might seem a bit overwhelmed by this decision as it could potentially create scenarios in which players can very quickly gain a significant lead.

Galaxies: Return to the Stars 5-Cost Adjustments

It looks like 5-cost champions will be getting a lot of love from Rioters so that the unique abilities feel even more impactful when you get to use them.

Almost every 5-cost has received a 3-star upgrade treatment, and I can’t wait to see your clips as you hit them (every game trust?). Happy rolling!

This will surely result in a lot of players trying to get their hands on 5-cost champions as quickly as possible.

Galaxies: Return to the Stars Quality of Life Updates

A lot of quality-of-life changes will also be implemented to make the game feel better to play.

This means you can expect to see the pop-up panel on the carousel to help identify the item and champion you’re viewing, modern day champion tooltip improvements, and more.

It is important to note how much Rioters have started adapting to the players' wishes as bringing more clarity to the game for newer players will greatly benefit everyone so even more people give TFT a try for themselves.

Galaxies: Return to the Stars Balance

Possibly the most crucial aspect of releasing a set revival, namely being able to balance the game without deterring the fun but also making sure that everyone gets a chance to try their best build or strategy without quickly losing.

All in all, this set revival looks very promising along with the very detailed blog post, it seems that the devs have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. This temporary game mode will be available from patch 14.02 (Jan 24th) until the end of patch 14.04 (March 19th) during the Lunar Legacy event so stay tuned and make sure to give Galaxies: Return to the Stars a shot.
