Characters are the backbone of any gacha game, and Zenless Zone Zero is no exception.
Having strong characters means that you will be able to clear content easily and will generally have more fun.
If you’ve played previous HoYoverse games such as Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail, then Zenless Zone Zero’s leveling system will be quite familiar. For those of you who haven't, this guide will explain everything you need to know.
Table of Contents
How to Level Characters
Characters can be leveled up by first opening your character menu by pressing C on your keyboard.
There, you can pick any of your characters on the right and click Base Stats. Once there, you press on the two right-facing arrows that can be seen next to the character’s level.
Once you do that, a new window will appear, which will let you increase your character’s level.
In Zenless Zone Zero, you level up characters by consuming Investigator Logs, which can be found in various places throughout the game. These logs come in three kinds, with each kind giving increasing EXP for your Agents.
At the level-up window, you can either click on the Investigator Logs manually or simply click Auto Add, and the game will automatically use up the needed Investigator Logs to get your character to their current max level.

Promoting Characters
Similar to Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, character levels in Zenless Zone Zero are capped at certain intervals.
Once you reach the cap, you won’t be able to level up that character anymore until you Promote it.
You promote characters by using Certification Seals, which you can obtain through Training.
After you have the needed materials to promote your characters, you will be able to level them up again until the next level cap.

Raising Character Skills
Leveling your characters is not the only way to make them stronger. Yes, levels do help, but what will impact your damage even more is increasing a character’s skill levels.
To increase a character’s skill level, you once again go to the character menu, but instead of going to the Base Stats, you go to Skills.
There you can see all of your character’s skills, and once you click on one of the skills, you will see a Skill Enhancement button on the bottom right. Press that, and a window will pop up telling you what you need to increase the level of your character’s skills.
Increasing skill levels consumes Chips, which come in several types and can be farmed through Training.
Leveling up your skills is one of the best ways to make your characters stronger in ZZZ, so don’t forget to do it!
PRO TIP: Don’t forget to unlock your Core Skills, which are placed above a character’s skills.
